The different countries and regions provide a range of options suitable for all levels. From gentle, rolling breaks, to powerful, rugged waves that challenge even the most seasoned surfers, Europe is a top destination for surfers from around the world.

But surfing isn’t just about finding the right wave; it’s also about planning your trip wisely. Knowing when to go, what gear to bring, and how to prepare can make all the difference in having a smooth and enjoyable surf trip. With a little knowledge and preparation, you can make the most out of your European surf adventure and create lasting memories in and out of the water!

Best Surfing Destinations in Europe

Surfing in Europe provides a huge variety of options spread across the continent. Each destination offers something unique – here are some top locations you should consider:

1. Portugal – Known for its year-round consistent waves, Portugal is one of Europe’s most popular surf destinations. Spots like Ericeira and Peniche offer great conditions for beginners and pros alike!

2. Spain – Spain’s northern coast, particularly the Basque Country, is renowned for its powerful waves. The area around San Sebastián is teeming with surf culture and a reliable selection of beach and reef breaks.

3. France – The southwest coast of France, including spots like Biarritz and Hossegor, is legendary among surfers. Known for its vibrant surf scene and the consistency of the Atlantic swells, France offers excellent conditions and great weather – especially in the summer and autumn!

4. Canary Islands – Situated off the coast of Africa, the Canary Islands offer year-round surfing with warm temperatures. The volcanic landscape provides unique surf breaks, with waves ranging from gentle rollers to powerful barrels.

These destinations provide diverse surf experiences, making Europe a fantastic continent for your next surf adventure.

Ideal Seasons for Surfing in Europe

Depending on your surfing level and style, the ideal season and time to visit varies by location, so here’s a guide to help you plan:

1. Portugal – Summer also brings good waves but is more crowded – the best conditions are often found in the shoulder months of September/October and May/June when consistent swells hit the coast and provide a balance of great waves and fewer surfers.

2. Spain – For the northern coast, September to December is prime time. The swells are consistent, and the weather is still mild. Spring, from April to June, also offers good waves with less crowding and pleasant temperatures!

3. France – France’s surf season is best from late summer to early winter, particularly from August to November. The Atlantic swells are at their peak, and the weather is still warm. Springtime also sees good waves but can be more unpredictable.

4. Canary Islands – For the Canary Islands, the best surf season is from October to March. During these months, the waves are more powerful and consistent. However, the islands have waves all year round, thanks to their subtropical climate!

Surfing Gear Essentials for European Waters

Surfing in Europe requires the right gear. Here’s a list of essentials to ensure you’re prepared for any conditions you might encounter.

1. Wetsuit – European waters can be chilly – a good wetsuit is essential. For summer months, a 3/2mm wetsuit works well, while in colder months, you might need a 4/3mm or even a 5/4mm suit. Don’t forget booties, gloves, and a hood if you’re particularly susceptible to the cold!

2. Surfboard – The type of surfboard you need depends on the location and wave conditions. For smaller, mellow waves, a longboard or mid-length is suitable, in bigger, more powerful conditions, a shorter, high-performance board may suit you better.

3. Wax and Traction Pads – Make sure to bring the right type of surf wax for the water temperature!

4. Leash – Match the length of the leash to your board size and always carry a spare in case one breaks!

5. Fins – Make sure your fins are secure and in good condition. Carrying a spare set – and some extra fin screws – just in case is always a good idea!

6. Repair Kit – Small dings and cracks can happen, so having a repair kit on hand is useful. This typically includes resin, sandpaper, and other tools for quick fixes.

Tips for Planning Your European Surf Trip

Planning a surf trip to Europe requires some preparation to ensure you make the most of your time. Here are some essential tips to make your surf adventure smooth and enjoyable.

1. Research Surf Spots – Before you go, research the top surf spots in the countries you want to visit. Know the wave conditions, suitable board types, and local surfing culture. Get in touch with the surf travel experts at AWAVE Travel for all the information you need!

2. Check the Weather and Swell Forecasts – Keep an eye on weather and swell forecasts for your destination. Websites and apps can help you stay updated on the best days to hit the waves and any potential weather hazards to avoid.

3. Book Accommodations in Advance – Popular surf destinations can get crowded, especially during peak season. Booking in advance ensures you have the accommodation you want at the time you want it!

4. Learn Local Etiquette – Familiarize yourself with the surf culture and line-up etiquette!

5. Pack Accordingly – Make sure you pack all the necessary gear, including your wetsuit, surfboard, wax, and leash. Don’t forget essentials like sunscreen, and suitable clothing for both the beach and cooler evenings!

6. Travel Insurance – Having travel insurance that covers surfing is a smart move. This can help with any unexpected injuries or gear loss!

7. Transportation – Know how you will get around if you need to – either making your way to your resort or if you’re planning on visiting multiple surf spots.

Surfing in Europe offers a rich and varied experience, with fantastic waves and beautiful coastlines. Knowing the best destinations, the ideal times to visit, and the essential gear you need helps in the planning of a successful surf trip.

My wife and I booked an 8 day surf charter on the Gahaa with a dedicated surf guide Moussa who was worth his weight in gold knowing what breaks would be firing and his knowledge of marine life and Maldivian environment enlightening for my wife and I. From the initial booking and contact Guilia at AWAVE made the whole process seamless communication was excellent. I have traveled extensively and surfed many parts of the world this trip truly exceeded my expectations the crew were incredible taking us to excellent surf and snorkeling locations. The boat itself is a converted fishing Dohni that exudes old world charm is clean and meticulously cared for. The meals prepared for us were nothing short of exceptional excellent variety and plenty of it a mix of western and Maldivian fare. We are definitely coming back and certainly using AWAVE again! Thank you Giulia and Moussa our trusted surf guide who gave us incredible insights into Maldivian culture.

Absolutely Recommended. Giulia and James are top professionals: I will be using Awave for all my future surf trips. I have been surfing for 30 years and travelled the world so I have dealt with a lot of agents. Awave is in the top spot as far as I am concerned. I spent 10 days with them on a boat trip in Maldives’ central atolls: not only their recommendations were spot on but being a boutique agency they tailor the surf experience to the very specific needs. They are surfers (real chargers) and know personally each spot and surf operator they recommend (wtether it is a guest house or a resort or a boat).

Trip of a lifetime. First and foremost I'd like to thank James Colston from Awave Travel, for assisting me in every which way to help book one of the most memorable experiences I've had in my life. He was extremely responsive and answered every single question I had, even the dumb ones haha. As for AYADA, holy dooly, that place is paradise! Absolutely breathtaking, I couldn't believe I was actually walking around such a beautiful island! Big love to the staff at Magu Restaurant, seeing as how I ate there pretty much everyday, they were amazing! Very switched on and quick off the mark to help with anything that was needed. A special mention to Dhaboa and the captain who took me out surfing! I cannot speak highly enough about their friendly, helpful and straight up on point expertise. With Dhaboa picking the spots to surf and tips on where to sit to catch the best waves on the day, to the wonderful captain himself, filming and sending me videos of the waves I caught.
Absolute legends! Made my surf trip! Best holiday I've ever been on to this date.

Reliable travel agency to book a surf trip - Both Giulia and James were very reactive and adivsed on the best options. In our case we made a boat trip in Maldives. It is the second time we use Awave Travel to do a surftrip to Maldives and we have had a very good experience in both cases. They are a reliable and trustworthy travel agency, I highly recommend them.
