Surfing in Panama: Top Spots and Tips

Panama, located in Central America, is a hidden gem for surfers. Somewhat overshadowed by its neighbors to the north, Costa Rica and Nicaragua – its beautiful coastlines are less well-known but equally as impressive. Flanked by the Pacific Ocean on the west and the Caribbean Sea to the east, you’ll find a variety of waves that will suit any level of surfer and an enviable selection of epic spots.

Southerly Pacific swells peak during the summertime, whilst the Caribbean coast really comes alive during the winter months. Consistent swell is sweetened with a tropical climate that provides year-round warm water and frequent off-shore winds!

The beauty of the coastal environment gives way to lush jungles as you head further inland, and you’ll find diverse and delicious local cuisine with lively nightlife in the towns and cities to unwind after a day on the waves. With so much to offer, Panama is fast becoming a must-visit destination for any surfer!

Top Surf Spots in Panama

Santa Catalina

Santa Catalina is possibly the most famous surf spot in Panama – and for good reason. Ideally situated to pick up swell throughout the year, it offers consistent wave options and breathtaking scenery. The main attraction is La Punta, a rocky reef break with a short and spicy left-hander, or a long right-hand break, with quick barreling opportunities and a bowly inside section. Nearby spots like Punta Roca also provide additional surfing opportunities, and the town itself is charming with plenty of local eateries and comfortable lodgings – making it a great place to relax after a day of surfing!

Playa Venao

Playa Venao is another must-visit spot. It boasts a long sandy beach with options to suit all skill levels. Beginners and intermediates can enjoy comfortable take-offs closer to shore, with long shoulders to hone their maneuvers, whilst further out in the bay on bigger swells, more experienced surfers will want to head towards the reefy left-hand point break. The vibe at Playa Venao is laid-back, with plenty of accommodations, restaurants, and surf schools to choose from. The beautiful setting and friendly atmosphere make it a favorite among surf travelers!

Bocas del Toro

On the Caribbean coast, Bocas del Toro offers an epic mix of surf options. There are several islands and breaks to explore, with everything from gentle beach breaks ideal for beginners to barreling reef breaks for the more experienced. Bluff Beach and Silverbacks are the big names spots, both known for their powerful waves – but there are plenty of mellower options to explore. The town enjoys a lively nightlife, and the crystal-clear Caribbean waters, teeming with marine life help to make Bocas del Toro a unique surf destination.

Why Surfing in Panama Stands Out

Consistent Waves and Warm Waters

With the Pacific Ocean to the west and the Caribbean Sea on the east coast, Panama is blessed with a regular supply of swell all year round. Still relatively undiscovered compared to its Central American neighbors, the warm waters, consistent waves, and quieter lineups make it an increasingly attractive destination!

Diverse Surf Breaks for All Levels

Panama ticks the boxes for all skill levels. From gentle sandy beach breaks ideal for beginners to powerful reef breaks that challenge seasoned surfers. Santa Catalina’s long waves, Playa Venao’s versatile conditions, and Bocas del Toro’s mix of reef and beach breaks provide options for every type of surfer.

Rich Marine and Coastal Ecosystems

The rich marine and coastal ecosystems make Panama extra special. Lush coastal landscapes give way to crystal clear waters, vibrant coral reefs, and abundant marine life – natural beauty that provides a stunning backdrop to your surf sessions, helping to make Panama a top choice for surf travelers.

Practical Tips for Surfing in Panama

Best Times to Visit

Panama offers great surfing conditions year-round, but the best time to visit depends on your skill level. From December to April, the dry season provides smaller, more manageable waves on the Pacific Coast, ideal for beginners. This is the prime season to surf the Caribbean Bocas Del Toro, with consistent perfect waves! The rainy season, from May to November, brings larger swells to the Pacific Coast, which will be more suited to experienced surfers. The Caribbean Coast would see only a short swell window in July-August.

Essential Surf Gear

If possible, bring a selection of boards suitable for different wave conditions. A sturdy leash, plenty of board wax, and rash guards are a must – along with a good amount of sunscreen to protect against the tropical heat. Even though the waters are warm, a light wetsuit can be useful during early mornings or when surfing reef breaks, and don’t forget a basic first-aid kit for any minor injuries.

Local Etiquette and Safety

It’s always wise to stay informed about ocean conditions, including tides and currents, to stay safe in the water. You can check forecasts online for up-to-date information and tips on any hazards at spots that might be new to you. Make sure to greet the locals with a friendly “hello” or “hola” and always respect the ocean and local environment. Remember surf etiquette whilst you’re in the water!

Exciting Activities Beyond Surfing

Jungle and Wildlife Tours

Panama is home to diverse wildlife and lush jungles. You can join guided tours to explore rainforests, observe exotic animals, and discover beautiful waterfalls. The Soberania National Park and Coiba National Park offer fantastic opportunities to see monkeys, birds, and other wildlife up close. These tours are a great way to get a little taste of adventure and experience some of Panama’s natural diversity!

Cultural and Historical Sites

Panama has a rich cultural and historical heritage to be explored. Take a trip to the Panama Canal to witness a marvel of engineering. Stroll through Casco Viejo, the historic district of Panama City, and admire the colonial-era architecture. Or learn about the country’s history and traditions at local museums and cultural centers!

Local Cuisine and Nightlife

Experiencing the local cuisine and nightlife is a must when visiting Panama. Savor the flavors of fresh seafood dishes, traditional tamales, and tropical fruits from local restaurants and food markets. You can enjoy the vibrant nightlife in destinations like Bocas del Toro and Panama City, with beach bars, nightclubs, and live music venues offering a fun and lively atmosphere – perfect for unwinding after a day’s surf!

Surfing in Panama offers a unique blend of consistent waves, beautiful scenery, and rich cultural experiences. Whether you’re exploring the powerful breaks of Santa Catalina, the versatile shores of Playa Venao, or the vibrant reefs of Bocas del Toro, Panama has something for every surfer. The warm waters and diverse surf spots make it an ideal destination for any surfer!

Aside from the waves, Panama promises excitement and adventure. From jungle tours and wildlife sightings to historical explorations and culinary delights, there’s plenty to keep you entertained

Trip of a lifetime. First and foremost I'd like to thank James Colston from Awave Travel, for assisting me in every which way to help book one of the most memorable experiences I've had in my life. He was extremely responsive and answered every single question I had, even the dumb ones haha. As for AYADA, holy dooly, that place is paradise! Absolutely breathtaking, I couldn't believe I was actually walking around such a beautiful island! Big love to the staff at Magu Restaurant, seeing as how I ate there pretty much everyday, they were amazing! Very switched on and quick off the mark to help with anything that was needed. A special mention to Dhaboa and the captain who took me out surfing! I cannot speak highly enough about their friendly, helpful and straight up on point expertise. With Dhaboa picking the spots to surf and tips on where to sit to catch the best waves on the day, to the wonderful captain himself, filming and sending me videos of the waves I caught.
Absolute legends! Made my surf trip! Best holiday I've ever been on to this date.

Reliable travel agency to book a surf trip - Both Giulia and James were very reactive and adivsed on the best options. In our case we made a boat trip in Maldives. It is the second time we use Awave Travel to do a surftrip to Maldives and we have had a very good experience in both cases. They are a reliable and trustworthy travel agency, I highly recommend them.

Professional and Top Notch! From the moment we started planning our trip AWAVE was responsive and professional. We had a lot of back and forth picking the perfect location and resort and James and Giulia were patient and helpful. The resort we stayed at, AYADA in the Maldives, was beautiful and relaxing- great for families and couples! It was perfect for us- we have 1 surfer in the family, he was able to enjoy the waves and we also were able to enjoy the reef and snorkel as a family. Our kids loved the kids club and the private pool on the beach villas was amazing. The alcohol is expensive if you don’t do full board but that is to be expected. Wonderful vacation and amazing travel agency! Definitely recommend!!

I've used Awave twice ... so far. This is the second time I've used Awave for a trip to the maldives. Stayed in 2 different resorts this time. They've always been incredibly prompt at replying and handled everything for us, making sure the 2 Resorts were in touch to get us transfered half way through our trip. At one of the resorts I even bumped into Giulia and Delia who were out there surfing at the time. There's no doubt in my mind that I'll use awave again if I'm booking a surf trip

Indonesia Surf Trip/ Java/Bali/Sumba - James Colston was my representative from AWAVE - I’m an older solo surfer and James was attentive, respectful, extremely responsive from the initial planning stages all the way through the booking. And he was so patient with all my crazy questions along the way. I couldn’t have been more pleased with James’s level of service. Thank you James

Giulia was an amazing person to book with. I was overwhelmed with choices initially, but AWAVE knew their stuff and helped me with my options and even suggested delaying my trip so I could go to a certain hotel which ended up being the best decision I made all year.
