Salty Jackal Surf Camp
Namibia Surf Camp on the Edge of the Skeleton Coast
Located in the colourful coastal town of Swakopmund, Salty Jackal Surf Camp offers a truly unique surf adventure where the Atlantic Ocean meets the vast landscapes of the Namib Desert.
This relaxed and welcoming surf camp combines uncrowded waves, dramatic desert scenery and expert surf coaching to create one of the most memorable surf trips in Africa.
The Surf Camp
Salty Jackal Surf Camp is a charming surf house in the heart of Swakopmund – a laid-back town known for its vibrant cafés, surrounding desert dunes, and easy access to some of Africa’s best waves.
The surf house has a relaxed, social atmosphere where guests can quickly connect over shared surf sessions, sunset drinks and stories from the day’s adventures. The camp focuses on creating an authentic surf travel experience, offering guided surf sessions, professional coaching and the chance to explore Namibia’s rugged coastline.
Surf trips often head beyond the town’s local beaches to discover more remote breaks, with 4×4 vehicles used to access hidden stretches of coast along the Skeleton Coast. Between sessions, guests can enjoy Swakopmund’s cafés, craft breweries and adventure activities, making the surf camp an ideal base for a Namibia surf holiday.
Waves at Salty Jackal Surf Camp
Surfing in Namibia is raw, powerful and often uncrowded, making it one of the most exciting surf destinations in Africa. Around Swakopmund you’ll find a mix of consistent beach breaks and sandbars that offer fun waves for beginner and intermediate surfers, while more experienced surfers can explore heavier setups further along the coast.
The region is also home to Skeleton Bay, one of the most famous waves in the world. When the sandbank aligns with a strong Atlantic swell, the wave produces incredibly long, perfectly shaped barrels that can run for hundreds of metres along the desert shoreline.
Surf conditions are shaped by Atlantic swells and Namibia’s exposed coastline, with the best waves typically arriving between April and October. With miles of open beaches and very few surfers in the water, the experience often feels like exploring a completely undiscovered surf destination.
The Rooms
Accommodation at Salty Jackal Surf Camp is comfortable, relaxed and designed with travelling surfers in mind. The surf house offers a mix of shared dorm rooms and private rooms, providing options for solo travellers, couples and small groups.
Communal spaces with comfortable lounge areas, outdoor seating and a garden space are perfect for post-surf relaxation. The surf house also includes board storage, equipment and easy access to transport for daily surf trips along the coast.
The Food
Breakfasts are typically enjoyed together at the surf house before heading out for the day’s surf sessions, while evenings offer the chance to explore Swakopmund’s excellent restaurants and cafés.
The town has a surprisingly diverse food scene, with everything from fresh seafood and traditional Namibian dishes to international cuisine and relaxed beachside dining. After a day chasing waves along the Skeleton Coast, there’s nothing better than sharing a meal with fellow surfers while watching the sun set over the Atlantic.
