How to Choose the Right Surfboard

Choosing the right surfboard is crucial for having a great experience on the water. With so many different types of boards available, finding the one that suits your skill level and the waves you want to ride can be tricky. The right surfboard will not only help you catch more waves but also make your overall surfing experience more enjoyable.

When picking a surfboard, you need to consider several factors. Your height, weight, skill level, and the type of waves you’ll be surfing all play a role in deciding the best board for you. A good surfboard can make a big difference in how you perform and how much fun you have in the water.

In this guide, we’ll explore the different types of boards, what to consider when choosing one, how to find the right size, and tips for keeping your surfboard in top condition. Whether you’re a beginner or an experienced surfer, this information will help you make an informed choice and keep your board in great condition. Let’s dive in and find the perfect surfboard for your needs!

Different Types of Surfboards

Choosing the right surfboard starts with understanding the different types available. Each style of board has its own unique features that suit various surfing styles and conditions. Here’s a quick rundown of the main types:

1. Shortboards – Shortboards are the go-to choice for high-performance surfing. They are typically between 5’6” and 6’6” long. These boards are designed for quick and sharp manoeuvres, generally on steeper, more powerful waves. They offer great control and speed but can be less stable, making them best for experienced surfers.

2. Longboards – Longboards range from 9’ to 11’ or more. The added size and volume mean they are ideal for catching smaller, slower waves and are perfect for a smooth, relaxed style of surfing.

3. Fish Boards – Fish boards are shorter and wider, with a swallowtail design. They are great for small to medium-sized waves. Fish boards offer a balance of speed and stability, making them well-suited for intermediate surfers looking to improve their skills.

4. Funboards – Funboards, also known as mini-mals, typically measure between 7’ and 8’ long. They combine features of both shortboards and longboards. Funboards are versatile and can be used in a variety of wave conditions, making them great for beginners and intermediate surfers.

5. Hybrids – Hybrid surfboards blend aspects of different board types. They offer a mix of performance and ease of use. Hybrids can be customized to suit individual preferences, providing a good balance of speed, manoeuvrability, and stability.

Factors to Consider When Choosing a Surfboard

Choosing the perfect surfboard depends on several key factors. Here are some things to keep in mind:

1. Skill Level – Your experience level plays a big role in what type of board you should choose. Beginners may find funboards easier to paddle and more stable to ride, while advanced surfers might prefer shortboards for better performance.

2. Wave Conditions – Think about the types of waves you’ll be surfing. Bigger and more powerful waves often require shorter, more agile boards – smaller, gentler waves are more manageable with longboards or funboards.

3. Board Size and Volume – The size and volume of the board affect its buoyancy and stability. A larger, thicker board will be more stable and easier to paddle. Volume is usually measured in litres; more volume means more float. Beginners should generally look for boards with higher volume.

4. Board Shape – Different shapes offer varying levels of control and speed. For example, a wider nose provides more float and stability, while a narrower tail allows for sharper turns. Consider what you want to achieve with your surfing and choose a shape that complements that style.

5. Material – Surfboards can be made from various materials like fibreglass, epoxy, and even soft/foam boards. Fibreglass boards are traditional and offer a good balance of performance and price. Epoxy boards are more durable but can be more expensive. Soft boards are great for beginners due to their forgiving nature!

By considering these factors, you can find a surfboard that fits your needs and helps you make the most of your time in the water!

Surfboard Size Guide

Choosing the right size surfboard is essential for maximizing your performance and enjoyment in the water. Here’s a quick guide to help you pick the best size based on your skill level and the conditions you’ll be surfing:

1. Beginners – For those just starting, a longer and thicker board offers better stability and buoyancy. Soft boards around 8’ to 9’ are usually ideal. These boards help make paddling and catching waves easier and provide much more stability.

2. Intermediate Surfers – Once you’ve mastered the basics, you might want to experiment with shorter boards. A fish board or a hybrid between 6’ and 7’ is a good choice. These boards offer a balance between stability and manoeuvrability, making it easier to perform turns and progress your surfing.

3. Advanced Surfers – Experienced surfers often go for shorter boards that offer more control and speed. Shortboards ranging from 5’6” to 6’6” are common among advanced surfers. These boards provide greater responsiveness for tackling powerful waves and executing more advanced manoeuvres.

4. Wave Conditions – The type of waves you plan to surf also impacts the ideal board size. For smaller, gentler waves, a larger board with more volume will help. In contrast, for bigger, more powerful waves, a shorter, more agile board is preferable. It’s good to consider the typical wave conditions of your favourite surf spots when selecting your board size.

Maintenance Tips for Your Surfboard

Taking proper care of your surfboard can extend its life and keep it performing well. Here are some simple tips to keep your surfboard in top shape:

1. Store Properly – Store your surfboard in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. Prolonged exposure to UV rays can weaken the board’s structure. If possible, use a board bag for extra protection when storing or transporting your surfboard.

2. Fix Dings Promptly – Even small dings and cracks can allow water to seep into your board, causing more significant damage over time. Repair any dings as soon as you notice them. If you’re not comfortable doing it yourself, take it to a professional for repair.

3. Wax Regularly – Keeping your board well-waxed ensures you get the grip needed during your surf sessions. Remove old wax before applying a new coat and use a base coat followed by a top coat for the best traction!

4. Check Fins and Leash – Regularly inspect your fins and leash for signs of wear and tear. Tighten any loose screws on the fins and replace the leash if it shows signs of damage. Keeping these components in good condition helps you stay safe in the water.

By following these maintenance tips, you can preserve your surfboard’s performance and longevity, ensuring it’s always ready for your next adventure!

Choosing the right surfboard and taking good care of it makes a huge difference in your surfing journey, and understanding the different types of boards and what factors to consider helps you make an informed decision.

Regular board maintenance is just as important. Storing it properly, and being diligent about repairs keep your surfboard in good shape and means fewer headaches down the line!

Absolutely Recommended. Giulia and James are top professionals: I will be using Awave for all my future surf trips. I have been surfing for 30 years and travelled the world so I have dealt with a lot of agents. Awave is in the top spot as far as I am concerned. I spent 10 days with them on a boat trip in Maldives’ central atolls: not only their recommendations were spot on but being a boutique agency they tailor the surf experience to the very specific needs. They are surfers (real chargers) and know personally each spot and surf operator they recommend (wtether it is a guest house or a resort or a boat).

Trip of a lifetime. First and foremost I'd like to thank James Colston from Awave Travel, for assisting me in every which way to help book one of the most memorable experiences I've had in my life. He was extremely responsive and answered every single question I had, even the dumb ones haha. As for AYADA, holy dooly, that place is paradise! Absolutely breathtaking, I couldn't believe I was actually walking around such a beautiful island! Big love to the staff at Magu Restaurant, seeing as how I ate there pretty much everyday, they were amazing! Very switched on and quick off the mark to help with anything that was needed. A special mention to Dhaboa and the captain who took me out surfing! I cannot speak highly enough about their friendly, helpful and straight up on point expertise. With Dhaboa picking the spots to surf and tips on where to sit to catch the best waves on the day, to the wonderful captain himself, filming and sending me videos of the waves I caught.
Absolute legends! Made my surf trip! Best holiday I've ever been on to this date.

It is the second time we use Awave Travel to do a surftrip to Maldives and we have had a very good experience in both cases. They are a reliable and trustworthy travel agency, I highly recommend them.
