Surf Etiquette: What is it? And Why is this Important?
Surfing is epic, right? This is why we travel the world, looking for perfect waves. But nothing can bring down a perfect surf, more than a chaotic lineup. Drop-ins, snaking, and all manner of bad behaviour can turn perfection into a drag! Proper surf etiquette makes surfing better for everyone!
Understanding and respecting surf etiquette is crucial to maintain a safe, fair, and enjoyable environment for everyone in the water. In this article, we will discuss the importance of surf etiquette and the reasons why it is essential to follow it.
The Priority System
When priority is respected, everyone in the line up gets more waves and people are happier! An orderly lineup means that everyone gets to take their turn and most importantly, surf waves without drop ins or hassle!
When surfing at perfect reef break, creating a lineup is easier as there is usually a clearly defined take off spot. Each surfer in the water has a number starting from 1, with 1 having first priority, 2, the 2nd in line, and so on. When a wave comes, the surfer in 1st priority can choose to paddle or to signal that they don’t want the wave.
If the 1st priority paddles, takes the wave then all the others move up a space. If 1st misses, then they move to the back of the queue! This keeps the waves flowing through and allows everyone to get their fair share. A well-ordered line-up makes even the most crowded spots fun!
Think of yourself at a bar waiting for a drink, you wouldn’t just push in front of those waiting, would you? Same applies in the water!
Safety
Safety is the most critical aspect of surf etiquette. Surfing can be a dangerous sport, and following proper surf etiquette helps to minimize the risks. Some essential rules to remember include:
- Always be aware of your surroundings, including other surfers and potential hazards such as rocks and reefs.
- Give way to other surfers who are riding the wave or who have been waiting longer than you!
- Never drop in on someone else’s wave or take off in front of another surfer.
Fairness
Surfing is a sport that is heavily dependent on fairness. There are only a limited number of waves available, and every surfer wants to catch one. Therefore, it is crucial to respect the unwritten rules of the lineup. Some of these rules include:
- Respecting the priority system
- Respecting the locals (we are only visiting!)
- Being patient and not rushing to catch the first wave that comes your way.
Not Wasting Waves
Waves are a precious resource, and it is important to respect them. This means not wasting waves and making the most of what there is. Some ways to ensure that you are not wasting waves include:
- Only catching waves that are appropriate for your skill level.
- Avoiding wiping out unnecessarily, which can create a lot of wasted waves.
- Not hogging waves and giving others a chance to catch them.
Everyone Gets Excited But Try to Respect the Line-Up
When the waves are good, everyone gets excited, and it is easy to forget about surf etiquette. However, it is crucial to remain respectful and follow the rules of the lineup. This includes:
- Not getting too aggressive or pushy when trying to catch a wave.
- Not paddling around or snaking other surfers to get to the best position.
- Being patient and waiting for your turn.
Keep a Good Vibe in the Water
Following surf etiquette helps to maintain a positive and friendly environment in the water. This includes:
- Respecting other surfers and treating them how you would like to be treated.
- Encouraging others. Everyone likes to hear they’re surfing well!
- Not getting angry or aggressive, even if someone else breaks the rules.
If in the Wrong, Apologise
Nobody is perfect, and sometimes even the most considerate surfers make mistakes! If you break the rules, it is essential to apologise and show respect to other surfers. This includes:
- Acknowledging when you have made a mistake.
- Apologising to the surfer you have affected.
- Being willing to make amends and learn from your mistakes.
Apologies go a long way if you drop in on someone else!
Above all, Enjoy Your Trip!
Finally, surfing is meant to be fun! As surfers, we are lucky enough to visit some of the most beautiful places in the world, doing what we love. By following surf etiquette, you can ensure that you and the other surfers in the water have the best possible experience.
Conclusions:
In conclusion, surf etiquette is essential for maintaining a safe, fair, and enjoyable environment in the water. By following these unwritten rules, you can ensure that you make the most of your time in the water and everyone gets their waves!
As a wise person once said, ‘It is much more fun to call people into waves, than to call them off!’.
