Surfing Adventures in Morocco: Best Spots and Resorts

Morocco borders the Atlantic Ocean on the West Coast of  North Africa. Offering over 2,500km of coastline, you’ll find stunning beaches, world-class waves, and a rich culture that makes it a perfect destination for your next surf adventure. Bustling surf towns that flow with the energy of visiting surfers from all over the world punctuate a coastline that still harbours a host of uncrowded beaches and hidden waves.

You’ll find the best surf during the fall and winter months, when the Atlantic sends long-distance groundswells to the Moroccan coast, although consistent surf is on offer all year round. With a combination of warm weather and cool water, and everything from powerful reef breaks to gentle beach waves –  whether you’re just starting your surfing journey or you’re looking to take your surfing to the next level, there are waves available for every level.

With such close proximity to Europe and excellent flight options, Morocco’s waves are incredibly accessible. Throw in an immersive cultural experience, delicious local cuisine, and surf resorts offering a range of luxurious amenities, from yoga sessions to spa treatments, and it’s no wonder the magic of Morocco continues to attract surfers year after year!

Best Surf Spots In Morocco

Morocco offers a variety of surf spots that cater to all different skill levels. Here are some of the must-visit surf locations:

  1. Taghazout – Taghazout may be the most well-known surf town in Morocco. With several iconic breaks, including Anchor Point – a long, right-hander that is ideal for advanced surfers looking for the challenge of surfing one of the world’s most famous waves! Nearby waves such as Panoramas, offer gentler options suitable for beginners and intermediate surfers.
  2. Imsouane – The Magic Bay of Imsouane is known for its perfect peeling right-hander – one of the longest waves in Africa, and a dream wave for longboarders and beginner surfers. Outside of the bay, Cathedral Point offers a more powerful alternative that’s best suited to more experienced surfers.
  3. Agadir – Agadir provides consistent surf conditions and is home to a great selection of surf schools and camps. It is an excellent spot for beginners to learn and progress, with sandy beaches and gentle waves aso making it a great spot for family surf trips.

What to Expect When Surfing in Morocco

Surfing in Morocco offers a unique blend of cultural exploration and epic waves. With a mild climate all year round, the best surf conditions can be found from October to April. During these months, you can expect larger swells and more consistent waves – with the water temperature ranging from cool to moderate a wetsuit is often needed, especially in the winter.

Wave conditions vary by location. Areas like Taghazout and Imsouane provide waves suitable for all levels – from gentle beach breaks to challenging point breaks, and generally mild, offshore winds in the morning that help to create ideal surf conditions.

Experiencing the local culture is as much a part of a surf trip to Morocco as the waves themselves. Make sure to explore the traditional markets, where you can find local crafts and spices, and sample the Moroccan cuisine – famous for its vibrant dishes like tagine and couscous.

Tips for Planning Your Surf Trip to Morocco

Proper planning and preparation can make all the difference to a surf trip to Morocco! Here are a few tips to make your trip as smooth as possible:

  1. Choose the Right Time – The best time to surf in Morocco is from October to April. Planning your trip during these months will give the the most consistent and highest-quality waves – however, the summer months can still offer great conditions, especially for beginners.
  2. Pack Proper Gear – In winter, a thicker wetsuit will keep you warm, while in spring and fall, a spring suit will suffice. Don’t forget sunscreen and a hat for sunny days!
  3. Book Early – Popular surf spots and resorts can fill up quickly. Book your accommodation and any guiding or surf sessions in advance to secure your spot. This is especially important during peak surf season!
  4. Learn Basic Arabic or French – While many people speak English, knowing a few basic phrases in Arabic or French can be helpful and show respect for the local culture. Simple greetings and thank-yous can go a long way!
  5. Respect Local Customs – Morocco is a predominantly Muslim country with its own customs and traditions. Dress modestly, especially when not on the beach, and respect local practices and traditions.
  6. Arrange Transportation – Renting a car is often the best way to explore various surf spots. Public transport is available, but a car provides more flexibility. Make sure you have the necessary documents and insurance.

Whether you are riding the long waves in Imsouane, experiencing the bustling surf town of Taghazout, or relaxing in a luxurious resort, Morocco provides an unforgettable adventure. The blend of thrilling waves, beautiful landscapes, and rich cultural experiences with year-round quality waves make it an excellent surf destination.

My wife and I booked an 8 day surf charter on the Gahaa with a dedicated surf guide Moussa who was worth his weight in gold knowing what breaks would be firing and his knowledge of marine life and Maldivian environment enlightening for my wife and I. From the initial booking and contact Guilia at AWAVE made the whole process seamless communication was excellent. I have traveled extensively and surfed many parts of the world this trip truly exceeded my expectations the crew were incredible taking us to excellent surf and snorkeling locations. The boat itself is a converted fishing Dohni that exudes old world charm is clean and meticulously cared for. The meals prepared for us were nothing short of exceptional excellent variety and plenty of it a mix of western and Maldivian fare. We are definitely coming back and certainly using AWAVE again! Thank you Giulia and Moussa our trusted surf guide who gave us incredible insights into Maldivian culture.

Absolutely Recommended. Giulia and James are top professionals: I will be using Awave for all my future surf trips. I have been surfing for 30 years and travelled the world so I have dealt with a lot of agents. Awave is in the top spot as far as I am concerned. I spent 10 days with them on a boat trip in Maldives’ central atolls: not only their recommendations were spot on but being a boutique agency they tailor the surf experience to the very specific needs. They are surfers (real chargers) and know personally each spot and surf operator they recommend (wtether it is a guest house or a resort or a boat).

Trip of a lifetime. First and foremost I'd like to thank James Colston from Awave Travel, for assisting me in every which way to help book one of the most memorable experiences I've had in my life. He was extremely responsive and answered every single question I had, even the dumb ones haha. As for AYADA, holy dooly, that place is paradise! Absolutely breathtaking, I couldn't believe I was actually walking around such a beautiful island! Big love to the staff at Magu Restaurant, seeing as how I ate there pretty much everyday, they were amazing! Very switched on and quick off the mark to help with anything that was needed. A special mention to Dhaboa and the captain who took me out surfing! I cannot speak highly enough about their friendly, helpful and straight up on point expertise. With Dhaboa picking the spots to surf and tips on where to sit to catch the best waves on the day, to the wonderful captain himself, filming and sending me videos of the waves I caught.
Absolute legends! Made my surf trip! Best holiday I've ever been on to this date.

Reliable travel agency to book a surf trip - Both Giulia and James were very reactive and adivsed on the best options. In our case we made a boat trip in Maldives. It is the second time we use Awave Travel to do a surftrip to Maldives and we have had a very good experience in both cases. They are a reliable and trustworthy travel agency, I highly recommend them.
