The villa is situated in the Sri Lankan Buddhist beach village of Ahangama on the south coast a short tuk-tuk ride to the best surf in Sri Lanka and the gorgeous beaches of Midigama, Mirissa and Unawatuna and the picturesque Galle Fort.
The Retreat
Nestled amidst the lush jungle, Sunshine Stories Retreat is a hidden gem housed within a century-old Dutch colonial villa. Imbued with the architectural influence of renowned designer Geoffrey Bawa, this enchanting location holds a unique charm. Situated in Ahangama, it occupies an ideal position at the heart of Sri Lanka’s surfing paradise. Surrounded by incredible waves, delightful cafés, and an authentic village atmosphere, the retreat offers a truly captivating experience.
The rooms are thoughtfully designed to encircle a charming courtyard, adorned with a magnificent frangipani tree at its centre. This captivating space serves as a gathering point, where guests come together to enjoy delicious meals, engage in surf theory sessions, and simply relax and socialize throughout the day.
Waves at Sunshine Stories
Sri Lanka offers exceptional surfing opportunities all year round, thanks to its tropical climate and consistent sea and air temperatures ranging from 27-31ºC.
In the prime surf season of November to April, the region is a beginner and intermediate dream with loads of waves suited for improving with offshore winds! For advanced surfers, there are some more challenging reef breaks.
Sunshine Stories is situated in the heart of a surf mecca on Sri Lanka’s southwest coast, surrounded by an abundance of incredible surf. With over 20 surf breaks within a convenient 5-minute tuk-tuk ride, there is a wave for everyone to enjoy. Whether you prefer small and friendly beach breaks, long peeling point breaks, challenging shallow reefs, or the thrill of perfect barrels, you’ll find it all here.

Accommodation
Sunshine Stories offers six uniquely configured bedrooms. One room accommodates 4 guests, while the rest are designed for 2. The rooms provide a comfortable experience with amenities such as hot water, quality mattresses, cosy pillows, and high-quality bed linens.
As an environmentally conscious property, Sunshine Stories does not have air conditioning. Instead, the rooms are fan-cooled, allowing us to maintain an eco-friendly approach. With the traditional construction style and natural ventilation, the house remains cool and provides a highly comfortable atmosphere.
The Food
At Sunshine Stories, they prioritize sourcing their ingredients locally on a daily basis to create exceptional meals! Supporting the local economy is important to them, which is why they hire staff and purchase food from the surrounding area. They make conscious efforts to acquire spices, rice, and other food items from farmers’ markets, opting for bulk purchases without plastic containers.
At the heart of Sunshinestories is the belief in sharing delicious meals together around a communal table. The retreat package includes breakfast, lunch, daily tea time, and most dinners. They offer a breakfast buffet with eggs, fruit, bread, and beverages. Lunch features traditional Sri Lankan rice and curry with fresh salads and veggies. For dinner, we have BBQs and famous pizza nights. Occasionally, you will dine at local restaurants.
Activities
In Ahangama, there is an abundance of activities to keep you engaged and enthralled. You can immerse yourself in the vibrant café culture, sampling local delicacies and enjoying the laid-back atmosphere, wander through the streets, interact with friendly locals, and learn about their traditions. Embark on a whale-watching excursion from nearby Mirissa or Weligama, explore cultural sites, such as temples and ancient ruins, and venture into nearby national parks to encounter diverse wildlife.
Yoga & Wellness
Each morning at Sunshine Stories begins with a rejuvenating yoga session followed by a surf. The benefits of yoga for surfing are extensive, including improved strength, flexibility, and enhanced breathing techniques. Massage therapy also plays a remarkable role in enhancing the surfing experience. Their tailored massage treatments are designed to align with the surf and yoga week, allowing for a deeper connection with the entire experience.
Getting There
The international airport in Sri Lanka is COLOMBO (CMB). Airport Transfers can be organised at cost. The retreat always starts on Sunday and ends on the following Sunday. Check-in is 2 pm and check-out is 10 am the following Sunday.
